Description
The seeds of alligator peppers are a great source of phytonutrients, including saponin, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and cardiac glycosides. They scavenge for free radicals and provide defense against the body’s interactions with viruses, allergens, bacteria, platelet aggregation, tumors, ulcers, and hepatotoxins, which can cause chemical liver damage.
Alligator pepper is a diuretic and worm-expellant that also treats malaria and heals wounds. It has historically been used to treat gastrointestinal issues, fibroids, and dermatological conditions. It also possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities. It is an aphrodisiac and sperm enhancer; in fact, a US patent for a powerful aphrodisiac has been granted to a preparation made from it.
According to studies, alligator pepper extract has a wide range of activities, which means that it inhibits the growth of bacteria like Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi, among others.
In the West African Journal of Pharmacology and Drug Research, prolactin levels in the serum of Wistar nonlactating rats treated with alligator pepper seed were found to be significantly lower. This validates its custom of being used to wean infants off of breast milk.
