Locust beans/Iru (125g/4.4oz)


Dried Irú Locust Beans are a type of fermented and organic locust beans used as a condiment in cooking to add a punchy Umami flavour to dishes.

It is very popular among the Yoruba and Edo people of Nigeria. The seeds are obtained from the pods of the African locust tree, Parkia biglobosa, recommended for traditional Nigerian soups such as Egusi soup, Ayamase stew, Ewedu soup, and Ogbono soup. Add Irú as an aromatic at the beginning of the cooking process to sautéed dishes, along with garlic, onions, etc. Soak in hot water to soften.


They are a good source of protein and vitamins and can help reduce the risk of cancer, control diabetes, improve heart health, boost energy levels, and aid weight loss.
